Default google.com ranking v google.co.uk ranking

Any SEO experts out there know what the difference is between google's algorithms for different countries? I ask because I'm in the UK and want to get ranked on google.co.uk and seem unable to, even though I'm getting ranked on google.com.

For example one of the terms I'm ranked on google.com for has 219,000 search results. I'm ranked top 2 results on page 2 of google.com. Yet the exact same search term on google.co.uk only has 10,500 results but I'm nowhere to be seen there.

Anybody got any suggestions as to how to get into the UK site?

Thanks,
Andrew

How new is the site? Is it established or just going through the indexing process?

The main two factors which will make a difference in the short term are the domain (.com,.co.uk...) and the location of the servers hosting your site. Being in the UK with UK based web hosting I will generally get better results on google.co.uk with all things being equal (using a .com domain)

If the site is still young that just leave it be and it will get picked up in the google UK serps over time, and probably end up ranking slightly higher than on google.com if you are using a UK web host and/or are using a .co.uk domain.

You could also try focusing on building backlinks from UK domains and setting up the geographic target in webmaster tools to the United Kingdom.

Thanks kevlah. It's all new at the moment so perhaps I just have to be patient. But thanks for the suggestions.

I also suggest to obtain links from UK domains.

With setting up your website to be country specific is there an "exclusion effect" at all?

What I mean is, suppose from Google search 40% searches come from the UK, 20% from the US and the remaining 40% from the rest of the world.

So you want to focus on the 40% coming from the UK but you by no means want to exclude the remaining 60%.

If you use .co.uk, use UK hosting or specify the UK in webmaster tools will that make you less likely to rank well in the rest of the world? (as compared to having no targeted geographic location).

My guess is that Google will :

1. Give you a large increase to your chances of ranking well in the UK (as you are telling them your website is most relevant to the UK)
2. Give you a small decrease to your chances of ranking well in the US (as you are telling them your website is more relevant to the UK and hence less relevant to the US)

Is my guess any good or is there no effect to your US rankings if you target the UK?

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

Yes, there much differencies with regional algorithms and USA algorithms. Less filters, etc.
