Anyone use a trackbacks method for backlinks?

Just wondering if anyone here uses or has used a trackbacks posting program to get backlinks. I have one and am not very fond of it. It is called SEO Trackbacks Suite. The software goes out and finds thousands upon thousands of blogs that accept trackbacks, then it goes and posts a little trackback/comment on those blogs with an anchor text link back to your site. I had been using this for about 2 months and then stopped because I wasn't noticing any results in the SERPs. I assume my lack of results is because of the number of outgoing links from these pages and the fact that these links are nofollow (which alone is a major reason why I feel like this program is garbage). So has anyone here used a program like this? If so, what program, and have you had success with it or not?
