Default Domain with .state suffixes

I'm looking at a niche market in New York State to open a campaign. I really could use some Warrior advice.
Could I please get a basic definition and comment about the impact on organic and paid searches when the domain uses a .state suffix?
Could anyone chime in about if there is a difference between using mydomain-ny.com, mydomainny.com and mydomain.ny.com?
How is SEO influenced by the addition of these suffixes?
What is your suggestion about using these for my domain?
Will the addition of any of these suffixes restrict my search results?
