Default Blogger and Squidoo and training programs

Ok I've completed my first listen to autoblogging 2.0, which by the way is not about auto blogging. It recommends auto blog software so I'll be getting my money back.

But in these training programs alot is stressed on keeping content fresh. But then I enter some keywords in google, and the top two entries are blogs from Blogger that haven't been updated since 2008.

Something tells me alot is stressed in training programs as a fear factor to get subsequent upsells.

Where can I find some real info on Google tactics. Who really knows what they are doing. For instance, I'm a programmer, so I'm trying to picture what Google does to determine when one blog or article is using content from another blog or article.

1) Match two articles on keywords. Then compare the sentences the keywords are in for exact match.

2) Compare whole paragraphs.

3) Compare <h1> and <h2> headers.

But they really can't get to a lower level like every group of 3 words considering 50,000 new sites go up every day.

You've read this and you're wondering what my question is.

How significant is maintaining fresh content in a blog for the sake of search rankings when I can find scores of old squidoos and blogs that rank #1 for certain (pretty obvious) keywords?
edit: the age of the blog and backlinks? or no longer looked at by google?

maybe I answered it.

Why not?

If copyscape can scan a page in seconds, wouldn't you think Google could do the same just as fast If not faster?

Besides a search engine won't crawl half the sites on the net each day/week/month. It's (Google) also not crawling from a single data location, as your software might only be located on your local PC (I assume).

I wouldn't think that finding two pieces of content that have a 3 word grouping that match could prove anything.

So it's tag content, title content, whole paragraphs in <p> tags, header tags, and possibly whole sentences.

Doesn't really matter I plan to write my own content. But I wonder about training programs stating 75% original vs 100% original and where they get this information. While some just say drip feeds and say go with it.

Dan Thies is a pretty good teacher, and I believe one of the few people who actually tests what they preach.

Sure you're finding old Squidoos and Blogspots ranking high after 2 years, but both of those domains are constantly being updated by people making new blogs and lenses.

I actually did testing on this, and the blog I updated more often got looked at more often by Google than the one I updated once in a blue moon...therefore it's pages got indexed more quickly, and rankings improved due to the internal linking structure of my site. I hope that helps!
