Default Digg to layoff 37% of Staff, Product Refocus Imminent

Digg To Layoff 37% Of Staff, Product Refocus Imminent

I think these social bookmarking sites will eventually fall by the wayside. No one uses them except to spam their own links. Well I don't know anyone that uses them for what their real purpose is anyway.

Thoughts?

everything has its own time. For those social bookmarking sites the dancing time seems to be coming to an end. Interaction with the sites is very manual and people are no longer ready for such kinds of games. People love automation but those social bookmarking sites don't want to go that way. TIME UP

Man, Kevin should have sold that site when he was offered 70 odd million.

I could not disagree more. People are always looking for the most interesting content, and social bookmarking offers that. What will happen is they will get better at burying spam. There are some sites out there that do offer only quality content, and they don't have the same issue with power users that Digg had.

The problem with Digg was they turned their back on their users, and became and advertising site instead of a news website. You see this happen in every other media when an outlet starts to spend more time on advertisers than watchers/readers etc.

Perhaps they need to make money as well. The only ways they could do that with that type of site is to either a) fill the site with adverts, or b) charge people to use the service.

If they choose b, they would lose users in rapid time. That just leaves option a.

It may be like the dotcom bust days. Back then, your 'package' was the contents of your desk being shipped to you a couple of weeks after you and the rest of the unfortunates were escorted out the door by private security guards.
