Do links to duplicate/syndicated/spun articles get counted

I did a search on a unique phrase in some articles I mass submitted to article directories. These articles were spun (manually). Initially I got 2,300 search results. As I went through the listings, only 150 showed and the rest went to the supplemental results.

Apparently all 2,300 pages are indexed, but (when)will Google count them as backlinks? When I look at the number of backlinks Yahoo Explorer lists, it is closer to 150. I know not all backlinks are listed, but is it safe to say that more than 10% of valid backlinks should get recognized and listed by Google/Yahoo Site Explorer?

So I either have to submit many more articles or I have to make those articles more unique so Google will index AND count as backlinks.

Google says to make sure that any syndicated content has a link back to the original article. I sometimes link to other pages on site, maybe I should always use one link to go back to the original article. Will this allow Google to count the backlink?

Does this make sense? Comments?

From Google:
Google tries hard to index and show pages with distinct information. This filtering means, for instance, that if your site has a "regular" and "printer" version of each article, and neither of these is blocked with a noindex meta tag, we'll choose one of them to list. In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we'll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved. As a result, the ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results.

Syndicate carefully: If you syndicate your content on other sites, Google will always show the version we think is most appropriate for users in each given search, which may or may not be the version you'd prefer. However, it is helpful to ensure that each site on which your content is syndicated includes a link back to your original article. You can also ask those who use your syndicated material to use the noindex meta tag to prevent search engines from indexing their version of the content.
