Default Building Backlinks to Ezine Articles

Is it ok to just have the ID in the link?

e.g. Instead of... http://ezinearticles.com/?Massive-Lo...son&id=7281991

Can you use..

http://ezinearticles.com/7281991

Doesn't look like it, no. Don't worry about the url. If you'd like to make it shorter/cleaner, use a url shortening service like tinyurl.

The URL above I made up myself, to prevent people accusing me of promoting my link.

Here is a real example.

Reveal The Fast Way To Lose Weight By Yourself

And..

Reveal The Fast Way To Lose Weight By Yourself

They both go to the same page, I just don't know if Google credits the actual link apposed to just "http://ezinearticles.com/5288467"

I see what you mean. Google would probably credit the url you build backlinks to. I would recommend going with the longer one, as it does have your keywords, and the shorter one redirects to it anyway.

Cheers.

The reason I ask is because when I check the long URL for backlinks, I always get zero. Even though I have built many backlinks it still shows zero. I have even checked lots of articles which are in the top 3 of google and they all have zero backlinks.

However when I check the short link for backlinks they all show up..

Really quite strange..

That is strange...I guess we won't know for sure until your article starts to show up in the SERPS.

Maybe an ezinearticles expert can explain this. I have no idea what might be causing this.

Kind of ironic that they misspelled "retarded". :P No point in worrying about it until you see the results come in. Just keep building backlinks, things should go fine.

The answer to your question as to why the short version is tracked by Google and the long version is not is simply understood by the Question Mark in the URL...

Question Marks in a URL indicate dynamic content, and while Google indexes dynamic content, it does not acknowledge back links to it, because Google does its back link check based on the root URL...

For example:

ezinearticles.com/5288467
is a standard URL and gets counted as a stand-alone web page...

ezinearticles.com/?Reveal-The-Fast-Way-To-Lose-Weight-By-Yourself&id=5288467
is a dynamic URL and gets counted as a direct link to the home page:
ezinearticles.com/

Therefore, all back links you create to the long version are counted as back links to the home page of the website...

LOL I don't know if Chris Knight did that on purpose, but that is one of the reasons he has come out on top of the Article Directory game...

I think the long version works better because of the keywords in the title.

So building backlinks to the long version is basically pointless?

It depends on the purpose of the links you develop...

If your only goal is to push traffic to your article, such as to increase your page views and get recognized in EZA's most popular articles list, then it will not matter which link you use...

However, if your goal is to build link popularity to your article, in order to increase the chance of your article being found in Google's search results, then you will always want to use the short version of the link...

I have never heard about this but I will definitely do some testing. I never see those standalone urls in the serps.

So I assume it works the same for Go Articles too but then how does internal linking work? Does the ezine articles author link just send link juice to your profile?

Is it only external links that are affected? So the only way to build link juice to your ezine or go articles would be to write more ezine or go articles?

This is all shockingly wrong. Links to dynamic URLs do not get counted as links to the homepage of a website.

Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Dynamic URLs vs. static URLs

We've come across many webmasters who, like our friend, believed that static or static-looking URLs were an advantage for indexing and ranking their sites. This is based on the presumption that search engines have issues with crawling and analyzing URLs that include session IDs or source trackers. However, as a matter of fact, we at Google have made some progress in both areas. While static URLs might have a slight advantage in terms of clickthrough rates because users can easily read the urls, the decision to use database-driven websites does not imply a significant disadvantage in terms of indexing and ranking. Providing search engines with dynamic URLs should be favored over hiding parameters to make them look static.

Also, if you do a link search on Google you will notice its returning the same links for the long and short URL for most articles:

http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&h...8a743f8bb10773

http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&h...8a743f8bb10773

Unless you need to use a short URL because of space constraints or some other issue its probably best practice to use the long URL as that is what ezine is using. But honestly it makes very little difference from a ranking perspective as Google passes the value of the redirect to the permanent URL.

Okay so after BishopMartin's comment this one is back in dispute, and this is important to me.

Anyone have actual ranking results, not just reports on which backlinks can be found?
