What would be the best way to keep on holding the current SERP position and prevent it from sliding down the hill....

Keep doing what you have been doing that resulted in the current ranking, especially link building. Remember, you have a lot of competitors and they will never stop building backlinks and improving their seo, so you have to always be one step ahead of the competition if you dont want to lose your position, Good luck.

To maintain your search ranking you need to have very good seo campaign including good on page optimization and off page as well....

u need to create good links and resources for your websites if, your links should be relevant, good authorized website, avoid bad links like porn etc...

Keep on doing your work, don't stop it if you have many competitors. Create more backlinks and hold your position.

Just dont decrease your daily work. Once you have reduced it then your ranking may also drop from its original.. So Participate daily and post original contents.

The best way to prevent a site from slipping in Google with the least effort is...

1. If its a static site, add a Wordpress Blog to a subfolder.
2. Update that Blog daily with news in your industry. (Does not have to be 500 words of content everyday. Just 150-300 words of "What's happening now news.."
3. Configure the plugin called Ping.fm and configure the profiles accordingly so that every news post you makes also syndicates to 20+ social profiles gaining links and traffic at the same time.

This kills two birds with one stone...

A constant stream of unique content and links...

...the ingredients required to maintain and improve rankings in Google.

Keep doing what you were doing so far indefinitely - if you had 150-200 constant incoming link a month continue doing that. you were updating you website 2 times a month same thing continue doing exactly that
Dont ever go Cold turkey on anything . not on links not on updates . nothing . you do so you putting your self 10 steps back.

I've had sites ranking for months without moving after it has ranked and I stopped building links.

But yeah to be 100% safe, just keep building links.

Maintenance is the key, when you do this your current link building will improve on and on. keep on doing quality link building that you have been practicing
