???highly ranked page with Google w/o any content???

I am still very new in affiliate marketing. So trying to decide about the best approach, I was looking for a good example of a website targeting Amazon products. I stumbled on a website (www dot hdtv dot net) that is ranked pretty high in Google. When I opened the page, there was no content. I always thought that Google needs content. What is going on?

It's also an 11 year old domain with a few backlinks. Looks like it's been dead for the past two years which is a shame, has a lot of potential.

It ranks well for "HDTV". So the age of domain and the number of powerful backlinks can override the content issue?

I checked all the way through the top 30 and didn't see it ranking for HDTV.

I mean all I've done is: typed HDTV in the Google search engine. It placed it #5 or#6 on my browser. I am from Canada (local search?). Does it matter?

It's in the 3rd page for mine 2nd from the last.... I don't think the geographical locations would make it differ though, so maybe you would like to check again. edit: maybe it does

Anyway, not having content on a website homepage does not mean that they don't have 'hidden' pages behind that homepage... meaning they could make the other pages unaccessible through the homepage, but create other pages behind it and get it indexed/build backlinks to them.. not sure why some would do that though but I'm sure some people does that.

As for the site, I am pretty sure now that the geographical location matters. Second, you might be right about hidden pages. Interesting concept about behind the scene work.

Well first of all I would like to add that yes geographical location of a search engine or if I precisely say Google is matters a lot. It's my personal experience for last one year that on a particular keyword the search rank of a specific site is different on a global search engine and different rank on country specific search engines. I spent a lot on this issue for one of my site.

Secondly yes still there are sites around on Google which has almost no content at all but they are highly ranked. Well Google is trying to remove these no content sites but it won't happen overnight. Because an elven year old domain with backlinks has some supremacy in the eyes of Google.

How do you make sure you use a global search on google as I am not interested in how well I rank for a specific keyword in my country but am interested in how it ranks globally?

Looks like it's only ranking in Google Canada (google.ca), and not google.com. It's probably a result of backlinks that were sent to it in the past, and this is an aged domain that probably had some content on it in the past.

Always use Google.com if you want to search for a specific keyword globally.

Sometimes or rather most of the times if we go to Google.com then it automatically redirects us to that country's specific search engine to whom our internet IP is belonging, so make sure you always check the Google link in address bar whether it is Google.com or any specific country's search engine link like Google.ca.

I am precisely telling this because we often ignore this factor and wrongly calculate our site ranks, it happened to me so many times but now I always check my address bar whenever visit Google.

Thats absolutely correct- i have read on an seo s own blog (she teaches seo for the govt) where she saw a 'website' that didnt even exist when clicked on outrank a decent website due to the number of links it had!!

could not find hdtv net on the first 5 pages of Google in the USA

but yes a site can rank without content with enough links. Why you would not have any content is beyond me though.

Same here (no show), I did a 100x10 page search.

The domain isn't in the top 1,000 SERPs.

It's not a high ranking domain.

I bet OP is getting personalized search results.

It's definitely there. I went to Google.com to avoid country specific search, typed "hdtv" and it's on the second page.
