What detemines if a video thumbnail shows in SERP?

I've been able to get videos on the 1st page of google for different long tail keywords. Sometimes the thumbnail is shown and sometimes it isn't.

For example I have one example of 2 different videos created the same way , each submitted the same way with same video platform, each showing on 1st page but one shows a thumbnail and the other one doesn't.

What I think of this is that it depends on the fact that if you have your link in the video description,it might display a thumbnail.I have seen this works before.

Honestly i don't know the reason of making thumbnails for some vidoes and not making some others but i think having or not having a link in the video its not the reason of it.

It's part of a complicated algorithm. If google deems a thumbnail
valuable, they'll show it. If they think a thumbnail isn't valuable
for the search, they won't show it. It takes into account many
things, including the search terms. They don't want thumbnails
mucking up the user interface if they can help it.

I know it's not the link because both of the videos I got on page 1 one with thumbnail and one without (2 different markets and different keywords) but everything else as close as possible to being the same both have links.

It's all about exact match keyword search...

Pick almost any Youtube video, then copy & paste the YT video Title into Google Chrome Incognito, & do a Google search (without qoutes).

Almost always returns that same video thumbnail image in the Google text search.

UPDATE: Good news. The 1st page serp result that wasn't showing a thumbnail for the video now shows a thumbnail. I guess sometimes it must takes a few days longer for the thumbnail to show for a video.

Did you add the keywords to your Youtube video?

Heres the lowdown:
1. Title the video with the exact keyword you want it to rank for, dont add any other description in the title
2. Add your URL in the description of the video
3. Backlink the video with 30+ Backlinks, backlinkteam has a specific package i have used for this and it works great. Its also cheap lol
4. Wait and see, it will show up if it shows up, if it dosent, build more backlinks or go after a different keyword.

I didn't change anything and they weren't youtube videos.
