Default Is this Hurting Ranking in SERPS?

I have an article directory that provides a long url for the articles (check out any article on Why Do? - Welcome to Why Do?).

Is this hurting the articles in the SERPS?

If so, what can be done about it?

It is not as bad as if the urls were all numbers, they do contain keywords but they could be better.

I see that you are using Joomla! as your platform. I am not a Joomla! expert but I would think that there is more that can done from the admin interface to modify the permalinks in order to make them a bit friendlier.

It is also probably possible to add some rules to your .htaccess file to clean the urls up a bit.

Now that is a long URL!!!

Code:
http://www.whydo.net/component/k2/item/977-when-modern-portland-cement-mortars-provided-an-alternative-to-lime-based-mortar-almost-100-years-ago-it-looked-as-though-bricklaying-had-been-freed-from-the-restrictions-traditionally-imposed-by-the-weather-mortar-made-using-portland-cement-sets-at-relat.html
I don't think it would be hurting you at all. In fact it's better than having numbers like the guy above me said. The only thing that kind of sucks is the "/component/k2/item/977" part of it. That part is on all of the articles and it won't mean anything to search engines. It would be better if the URL structure could be like:

domain/category/article.html

It won't hurt your serp's but from a visitors point of view I know that I probably wouldn't click on it as it looks a bit spammy.
So if your trying to get visitors to your article and your url is going to be shown, I'd find out how to change the url to something sorter and more enticing.

It can't hurt your ranking but its better that the made URLs for your website to be shorter than this. The address of links on your website are too long in my opinion.

So, with this for example:

Why Do? - Why do Bananas Hurt my Stomach

How do you shorten the length of the url?
