It's probably because you are getting low value links and/or links that aren't being found by Googlebot. There could be other factors at play such as slow load speeds, erratic server uptime, poor on-site SEO and such but usually, everything goes back to the quality and quantity of links. |

Are you getting links from relavant sites? How long have you been getting links. How many links do you have in comparison to your competitors? What are the PR of the links that you are getting verses the PR of your competitors? You may have been on page one for what many call a 'honeymoon' period and then had your site drop to where it supposed to be ranked. This happens all the time. Like bgmacaw said, there are a lot of other factors that can determine your rankings. |

Here is how I stopped Google from letting my site drop in SERP rank. I started out on page #1 in the SERPs, I started adding about 100 manual backlinks. Most backlinks were around PR3 still I had a few PR5-6 backlinks on this new domain. 1) Created new domain/site (ranking on first page in Google SERPs (EMD name)) 2) Created backlinks, anything from PR-0 up to PR-6 3) After a few days started slipping in the Google SERPs (now on page #2) 4) Kept adding more manual backlinks until I had around 100 backlinks. 5) Still slipping in the SERPs (bottom of page #2 in SERPs) 6) Stopped adding backlinks. 7) After a couple of days I had a few high PR-6 backlinks in Yahoo Explorer. 8) I went to Yahoo Explorer & started backlinking from the high PR-6 pages I had already backlinked from before. 9) Still not creating new backlinks. 10) A day or 2 later I started rising to the top of page #2 in the SERPs. 11) Repeated step #8 above on another high PR-6 backlink that I already had. 12) Hit the bottom of page #1 again in Google SERPs. 13) Waited a couple of days did nothing, no backlinks, no edits to the site, just let the site sit & settle down in the SERPs. 14) After the site settles down on the first page of Google for my keyword, I continue edits/post to my site, no more backlinks. 14) I'm now #2 & never fluctuates in the SERPs, holding strong, after a couple of months from step #1. |

Sounds like a good method Michael Scott. Its such a strange art, backlinking. I have been finding it too, less links, but climbing up the ladder in google. More links, sliding backwards! |

I have found that the age of your high-PR links matter a lot. If you have a PR 5 backlinks that has been there for 6 months you tend to see that your page won't dance around anymore. It holds its spot and allows you to rank higher without slipping.

Still I have to lean towards that 2nd set of high PR backlinks on existing backlink pages, since really that's all I did towards the end of promoting that site when it first launched. I would think it could be duplicated on any existing site. Just hammer out some fresh backlinks & try to get Google to drop the site in the SERPs, then repeat the steps in my last comment, see what happens.
