Some people may have already known about this, but I was confused for a long time. I heard people like jeremy in the forum tell me about search engine rankings. I never really got it, but now I think I have figured out a way to measure the competition and what it takes to beat them out. All I have to do is measure the sites ranking on the front page, namely in the top 5 positions. Once I do this I can determine is it worth it to go for that keyword or not. It may take a little work to get to the top, but it can be done. Now that I have figured out how to measure competition I am going to start compiling keywords so I can start building sites around them. I know this may not be new knowledge, but I think I finally get it. |

Just make sure getting the top spot for that keyword would actually be worth the hassle. Are people actually searching for that term? Good luck! |

How did you figure out how to measure the competition? I'm really curious as I'm working on setting up adsense sites and am attempting to assess keywords also.

Regarding the question above. There are many ways to do this. For one thing, in time you will be able to spot which sites are authority just by looking at them but for now you can use tools like Market Samurai to check their backlinks, domain age, etc. If you don't want to use Market Samurai then you can check their backlinks on yahoo site explorer. It's not perfectly accurate in my experience but it gives you a general idea. The best advice someone said above though was that make sure the keyword is getting a lot of searches because you'll be disappointed if you get to the top spots and no one is buying after all that work you put in.

All it takes is low competition , building backlinks and authority. If you use your own site you got to build authority. If you use ezinearticles or other directories those already have authority and thus making it more easy to 'dominate' a keyword

Good for you! I came to this same revelation a few days ago. Luckily my site is already pretty easily primed for the keyword I'm going for, now I'm just working harder at it. I've moved a few spots already. This forum has been incredibly helpful for me. I just submitted a few articles to a bunch of directories I found on here. |

Bingo, this is one of the easiest steps to learn but sometimes takes awhile to click for most. No sense looking past page one unless you plan on ranking there. |

Congrats man. A lot of people have a hard time catching on to the concept. I just brought up a new site a week ago and I have 2 keywords ranking #1, 1 keyword ranking #2, 1 keyword ranking #3, 1 keyword ranking #6, and 1 keyword ranking #10. Only the keyword ranking #10 has any links built to it. The rest are just playing on very low competition keywords.

Good job! It's a great feeling isn't it? Just keep doing what your doing. A lot of people lack the patience to rank for a keyword. They are unsure that the process is correct because they don't spend enough time with it. |

Congratulations. Its a great feeling when it all starts making sense. The really exiting part when digging into this kind of research is finding "competitive search terms" that are surprisingly not well optimised for SEO !!! Have fun |

Keyword research is the most important thing in ranking. Many a times, people are not patient enough to get a good keyword, just jump to work, most time rank for those keywords but with no traffic after so many hard works.

Its always nice when you have been struggling with something new, and all of a sudden the light bulb goes on... My problem is usually figuring out the first thing leads me to the next problem and so on, but hey, gotta take the first step!

Dominating a keyword can be as easy as 123, most people looks at competition. it does not matter if the competition is 30,000,000. The most important thing when doing keyword research is to head over to google.com and type allintitle:''keyword'' anything below 200 will be easy to rank for, i normally rank on page 1 witin a week or 2 using proper seo. you must remember 1 backlink can be better than 100 backlinks. It is quality tha counts not quantity. please thank me if this was useful, you will never have another problem dominating keywords. if anyone has questions about SEO i will answer, i have been studying google for about a year and i know it like a book. seo is so easy i rank for most of my keywords in less than 2 weeks. Thanks for your time and excuse my grammar. |

for me your only competition are the top 10 sites. Study them and learn why they are their in the 1st page and build a campaign much more effective than theirs. We have many clients targeting 1m + competing pages (exact search) two word keywords that is ranking #1 and 1st page. How did we take them to their current position? we evaluated the top 10 sites and more in depth evaluation for the top 5 sites. We explained to our clients the amount of work and time so that they have the option to back out or go for it. They understand the amount of work needed and we promised them result in the estate time frame that we have said to them. The sites lower than that did not matter and now most of our clients are in #1. the point is study the competition. If they have a good on-page and of-page campaign then have a better one. If they have a better campaign then create an excellent one. Always try to out-do what they are doing to be on top of the game. |
