Default Advanced SEO Question: Hiding content through DIVS

I have seen this before where a site has some content and then has a link for "more information" which then shows another paragraph or two when clicked on. I know they want to limit the content for visitors yet have the extra content for SEO.

How to hide, show, or toggle your div

My question is, will the search engine penalize you if you have a button called "more links" and rather than content, perhaps there are just 20 links to other pages on your site? i want to put a bunch of links on the bottom of my footer for interlinking.

Some people will say "yes, it does" but hiding content via Javascript and DIVs is quite common and often quite legit. For example, many forums and blogs about TV shows and movies have spoiler sections that only appear when clicked on to open them. Sites that use AJAX or JQuery also may do this in some situations where they aren't doing dynamic content loads.

What you need to consider is if the hiding is done to game search engines or is it being done for user experience.

Exactly what he said.

Google will probably have no problem for better UX, but if your hiding keywords then that's gonna be a problem.

so there a bunch of keywords I want to rank for and I have created landing pages for all of them. what is the best way to get them indexed and ranking then if I can't list them all on the footer?

How about if I do list them all on the footer and make them visible? so many sites do this. will google still penalize me?

it all depends on the manner you put those keywords.

i would really just like to list them and link them.

how about if i do a mixture of lists and also write out content (like 2 paragraphs) with keywords in them and then link them?

Well the best way is to have separate page for each keyword you want to rank with.

yes, i've created a separate landing page for each keyword or have combined two keywords per page if the keywords are close to each other. now the question is how to link them to the rest of the site.
