Default Bad publicity = Link Love from Google

Interesting article in the NY Times about this d-bag who appears to rank very well for search terms because of the link love he gets from the complaint type sites. Looks like Google is ranking those links high even if they're complaints about the company...

That saying is older than me!

I've noticed quite a few companies INTENTIONALLY do this.

For instance there is a dating coach who says really OUTRAGEOUS things!! But you see heaps of links by other people to him all over the place... I suspect even a few are by him to get the ball rolling?

I'm quite sure he makes an ok living, as he doesn't care if he pisses off a lot of girls and happily married guys etc as they're not his target market but he most probably loves the fact that they're still linking to him

Update... Google did slap him off the first page due to the NY Times article but they were bowing down to the bad publicity from the article. Ironic.

But according to Search Engine Land those links from the review sites wasn't the reason for the good rankings...

No, You Can’t Rank Well Just By Cultivating Terrible Reviews

The best example is probably this site Martin Luther King Jr. - A True Historical Examination, used to top position 3. Straight up white supremacist bull**** over there. Still ranking high because of all the discussions caused by the side's nature...
