Hi Warriors, Just wondering when choosing a longtail keyword to use for a mini site, what's the minimum monthly search you should accept on google keywords? By this I mean say the phrase is "dog stool" and it's monthly search on google is 2,500 - is this high enough etc? What's the minimum you should go with ??? :-) B |

I've seen most people say 3000 is the lowest they would go, so that's what I shoot for. Make sure you are checking the exact searches, and not broad or phrase. This will give you the most accurate number of searches done for a long tail keyword. |

What do you mean by exact phrases? Whats the difference in placing a word for search in google & placing the same word between quotes? Regards | |

When you are looking at search volume in the keyword tool, you want to see the exact match results. Look to the bottom left of the Google keyword tool, and you will see 3 options: broad, phrase and exact. Make sure only the exact option is ticked. That will tell you how many people are searching for that exact keyword phrase. How many you should look for is debatable. I think it depends on your niche and how competitive your niche is. Above 3000 exact searches is good, but don't be shy to take on a few with only 1000 searches. A lot of beginners fail to take action because they get so stuck on finding perfect keywords, and they end up never doing anything. |

The amount of searches is only one thing, you need to estimate what kind of return can the actual site give you if it's ranked!

I usually go for phrases that have a minimum of 1000 exact searches a month. Of course it is preferable if it is a little higher, but I would still go for a phrase of 1000.

| When targeting long tails I tend to shy away from anything less than 1200 exact per month but if there are multiple products or services related to the long tail then you can easily make up for the lower search volume by factoring those in as well... Example below – not real search volumes: Main category - at home gym equipment = 1200 searches Related products - adjustable dumbbells = 700 searches weider weight bench = 600 searches stationary air bike = 500 searches In the example above you could basically be targeting 3000 searches a month with just a little extra work on targeting those related products as well as the main long tail. Scale this up to whatever level the niche and competition will allow that you feel comfortable with. I know this is a little off topic but I've found it a good way to enter into niches that initially appear not worth the effort but in the long run have worked out pretty well for me. Also, more often than not, the terms with lower search volume tend to have less competition making it easier to rank well quickly. At least that’s been my experience. Good luck! |

It depends on how many other websites are trying to rank for that same keyword, but I go anywhere from 2500 to 5000 per month.

For me the volume matters but it's not the be all and end all. I'd like around 1000 + but the main thing for me is to get the exact keyword whereas i have a better chance of a conversion. If you look at long tailed keywords then most of them don't work for you and they only get you a small amount of actual traffic i.e. If you type into Google i need to lose weight fast then you'll pick up all the other high ranking keywords such as lose weight, lose weight fast etc...... so in short you need to be careful what keywords you choose so that they are very specific to what you are offering. |

It should all be relative to the results on google. Not neccessarily the amount, but the amount of backlinks on the PR1 results. I would rather target a term with 800 exact searches when I know I can get my page in the top rankings rather than compete with wiki and amazon and whatnot for a search term that gets 10,000 searches.

| I think I know what you mant to say here but don't automatically cut yourself out of a niche or market just because you see Amazon or Wiki in the top listings....they aren't always as hard to beat as most think they are.

Depends a lot on the type of the keyword. If its a buyer keyword you can go after lower volumes. Hope this helps.
