Assist me in getting a good position on search engines

I run a website. It is based on real estate. I was advised that many of the buyers and sellers are looking upon to the Internet to crack a deal. Buyers have been browsing through the web to find homes for sales in their locality. The sellers are also posting the pictures of their house on real estate websites to grab more buyers. But, I can’t understand how can one site reach on the top of search engine? There are so many real estate websites. Why will a search engine choose my site to give a good position? Please help.
