Default Once & for all - Does Google look at domain extension in ranking?

Some people say there is no difference in ranking between any extension, .net, .biz, .org, .com, ect...

But other people say that Google does favour some extensions over others.

So what do you think about this?

What would be the best for SEO out of the two choices below?

keyword.me

bestkeyword.com

Google will look at country code and what country you're searching in! But that can easily be out weighed.

.com the most common, the most known - naturally holds the most authority - not necessarily by the search engines, but by people...

Gotta take human opinion into consideration.

But when it comes to ranking... DO WORK! BUILD YOUR LINKS AND ANYTHING WILL RANK.

People who say EMD's autorank on the first page... HOGWASH. Maybe for a teeny tiny mini micro niche that barely gets any searches... Or, if you get lucky and find that untapped glory.

.com .net .org .info go with them.

You can get the correct answer for this from the people who work on the algorithm at Google. By the way, the people who work on the algorithm at Google have no interest in giving this information out. Everybody else who tells you the "answer" to your question is guessing. Sometimes it's a somewhat educated guess, but it's a guess nonetheless.

I'd stick with the big 3... .com, .net, .org.

It's doubtful that they really know for sure either. A code base of the size and scope of the Google search engine is inherently chaotic with many unexpected interactions and bugs.

To the OP, go take a look at one of the thousand of threads on this "Groundhog day" subject.

Trust bgmacaw to talk sense - it is almost a relief to read your posts most of the times. This is very very similar to what I believe, with very minor differences.

1. Invest $1. Cut you backlinking by 50%+. Click here. Seduce Google.

Well, I'm pretty confident that click through rate on the SERP is a pretty major factor of your website's position; however, I haven't seen much documentation on this. I just noticed that a higher ctr relative to position seemed to play a role in how Google ranked the page.

Anyway, if this is the case then it would make sense that .com would be the best. Something like .info would make people less inclined to click on the link. Either way, I still mostly use .info domains.

, and it only goes to show ... you know.

Did anybody else actually read that besides me?

The first 2 statements are in direct opposition.

Domain extension is not SEO. Remotely, as scott g said, for country extensions.
Example, top sites in Russia (for Russians) most likely will have a .ru, but not always.

Groundhog Day is such a classic. I've always been a Bill Murray fan.

This is only a factor in the Internet marketing niche where people are used to seeing stuff like clickbankproductreview.info type affiliate sites.

People outside of this relatively narrow niche are more likely to view it as an informational site rather than a sales/marketing site. My more successful .info domains use this factor to their advantage.

So I'm "guessing" this person, who works at Google, has the correct answer. Pity he didn't get the memo about "Google have no interest in giving this information out".

I have searched this site & others to find an answer to the question but views are very mixed on the subject.

I thought maybe there would be someone who has a strong view on the subject, who could share their reason for the belief that domain name extension is a ranking factor.

So the question is impossible to answer.

I'll just have to come to my own conclusion on the best domian name choice.

If you are talking according to SEO perspective than only country extension matters and SEO is done same for every website there is no issue regarding domain extension.

Personally, I have seen no evidence that ranking is more difficult with differing domain extensions. It would make little sense for Google to slap down innocent sites for having the audacity to have a certain TLD.

Imagine if that came out through something like wikileaks for example, a document confirming Google penalises any .info domain because they consider them "spammy".

There would be a legal firestorm.
