Dominating short and long tail keywords for free.... Does not have to be a so called "guru" technique..
Let me explain, THE GOLDEN RULE if you will is we want to discover keyword(s) that get a high amount of searches and a LOW amount of COMPETITION! HIGH SEARCHES + LOW COMPETITION--
I will try to keep this topic of dominating short and long keywords short, formal and to the point..
Before we begin,......"why does the web love keywords?".
The idea is you will use keywords for whatever it is that you want to appear in the search engines.
LET ME EXPLAIN:
Lets use "Chicago Hotels" as an example, This will be our short tail keyword.
The problem with this is..... most do not understand that short-tail keywords
will give us nothing but,.....WAY to much competition!
Now lets use, "cheap hotels in Chicago for students".
This will be our "long tail keyword". Granted we are using more actual words,
our competition will be much much lower than if we tried to dominate the market for short-
tail keywords.
Dominating short and long tail keywords for free does not have to be such a complicated topic in
IM, You have to keep in mind that you want to try to dominate the SERPS(search engine results)
you need to think about the competition you will have.
Google "adwords keyword tool" next time your trying to determine which keyword(s) you are going
to use for whatever you want rankings in Google for.
When you get to the keyword tool, try to discover keyword(s) with a few thousand searches at the
very least. Try different variations of the keyword(s) or key phrase you want to dominate
for free....It can be done for FREE!!! This is POWERFUL!
You will want results in Google to be 100,000 or less, if to much more there will
be to much competition.
If you want to be the person appearing on page 1 of Google, dominating short tail or long tail keywords for free, you have to try and find a happy medium.
Something your comfortable with using, and you must be comfortable with the amount of competition
that comes along with it. Do not give up on a keyword because you feel there is too much competition,
what you may need to do is try different variations of your chosen keyword.

Hi jhemion1,

I know what long tail keywords are but what is a "short tail keyword"? I assume you mean the head of a probability distribution as represented on a power law graph of keyword traffic volume. I have always thought of that as the head of the graph which is the opposite of the tail, it sounds funny, kind of like referring to someone's head as a short tail.

To make it a little easier and i hope with this brief explanation you
understand this a little better...
For starters lets define what a keyword is....: any word(s),
phrase`in Googles search bar is a keyword whether it be 1, 2,
or 10 words is still your keyword....some call more than a few words a (key phrase).

Another ex of short tail keyword: "beat migraine"...Do you see??
Heres an ex of a long tail keyword: :how to beat everyday migraines"...
..The longer the search, the longer the keyword. The longer tail the
keyword, usually the less results you get.

Less results is not always a bad thing...this means less comptition
if your trying to rank no 1 in google.

You dont want the results to be too little or it may not be profitable for you to do keyword research, which sometimes can be a little daunting.

Silly me, I always thought long tail keywords were keywords that made up the long tail of the distribution graph as it is usually referred to in a power law distribution curve. (Bradford's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

So your saying long tail keywords have nothing to do with statistics and the concept that was introduced by Chris Anderson in Wired magazine. Turns out, according to you, that it just refers to how many words are in the keyword phrase?
