Default Have I been slapped?

Hey warriors,

I've been working on a website for a while and it was doing really well... until recently.

I had been promoting my website and it had started ranking really well for my primary and secondary. in about 2 and a half months, I was able to bring it to #2 for my primary and #8 for my secondary keyword.

Then about 4 days ago, the website disappeared from Google's listing all of a sudden. I did a "site:" search on Google, and it seems like my website's still indexed. I just seem to have lost out on the rankings suddenly?

Any reason which could explain why something like this could have happened? Have I been, as the saying goes, slapped?

The Google dance, and evaluation of links, to reevaluate the rankings perhaps. Some consider it like a slingshot, you go way back and then move forward.

That happened to me with one of my sites. I was #1 for a phrase and then I was nowhere to be found after I did an edit on the TITLE tag. So I put it back and then I was back at #1 again. Go figure.

If it held it's ranking for a while and is still indexed it's likely not "slapped". If you've done any new link building recently or made changes to the sites configuration in some way that could be it. Give it a little time, most likely come back...possibly with higher rankings.

If you're talking about the site in your sig, the problem is a weak backlink profile, too few links and those there aren't very strong ones.

Remember when you have just a few links the loss or devaluation of a single link can make the difference between ranking or not ranking.

[Vince makes a complicated gesture in front of his apron, then slaps Pragun across the face with both hands, really hard!] Slapped? You have been, now!

Seriously, I've had content disappear from the SERP's for a few days, then had it magically reappear. Don't jump to concussions -- it may just be the Google dance, as it updates its search results across many, many servers.

This is quite normal.

This can happen anything up to 6 months or so of a new website before it settles. Just keep promoting and building quality backlinks to your site and forget about it's position in the serps for now - it will return.

Don't worry, this is Google dance in all likelihood. As I keep saying, Google dances when it is happy and slaps when it is angry. Since you are still in the index (site, Google is happy and not angry in all likelihood.

1. Invest $1. Cut you backlinking by 50%+. Click here. Seduce Google.

No my friend..you good..it will come back..we really don't know why Google does that but if you are ranked and do some type of link building..some way some how..it alters it for a day or so..but it will be back.

Don't think you have been 'slapped' as much as devalued. I am assuming you are talking about the site in your signature. You could give more value to your site by adding more variety to your keywords. In addition to anchoring 'stop panic attacks' also get links with 'stop panic attacks now' or 'stop panic attacks today,' for example. I do see one link for 'how to stop panic attacks,' which is a good one.

Be sure to look at the outgoing links on the pages where you are getting your links. You are not getting much PR trickle down effect leaving a link on a page that already has 168 outgoing links, for example.

I also see links for 'home page' and 'website,' which are also not giving any value to your site.

Those are just a few things to try. Wish you all the best!

Thanks for the input mate. I agree with you there. The links are few and weak as of now, but we've been building links continuously and will continue to do so even as I speak. I've just been a little low on funds, which has been slowing things down.

I am taking steps to cover the shortcomings mentioned by you though. Thanks

Thanks mate. This is my first time I've performed this well with a website. That reassurance definitely does me good.

Thanks Beth,

I will make sure that the backlinking efforts don't slow down and will keep doing it as best as I can.

True,
I had been building backlinks with only one anchor up till a couple of weeks back. I have started targeting two other keywords now, so that should help me cover the gap that you've pointed out.

Thanks for the input!

I was on page two for weeks and suddenly gone... checked 10 back and nothing. Then, about six weeks later, I was back and suddenly on page 1, where I have been since. It's the dance. You'll be back.

Give it some time, it might just be re-indexing. It's really hard saying. I've had websites totally disappear and then re-appear for no apparent reason.

Hi Pragun,

Congratulations you are our "Weekly Mystified by QDF" contestant. You've been selected to learn the secret of your ranking decline. To win, all you have to do is comprehend the following paragraph:

Relax, you have not suffered a penalty of any kind. Instead your ranking was temporarily boosted by QDF (Query Deserves Freshness), which is a temporary boost in rankings for new content. Once this temporary boost wears off, your page will sink to it's currently earned position in SERPs.

Now it's time to go out and promote your pages with solid promotional efforts and earn those higher rankings.

Its just one of those things Google does. Don't worry, your website will be back with it's good rankings. The search engine is just trying to determine where to place your website. Continue adding unique content to your site and backlinking it.
