Default Install a blog in the root directory or not?

After months of exams, I'm finally back here!

I'm about to start building a list on a new site and would like some advice from you guys and girls.

Should I install the blog in the root directory eg. mysite.com/ or under a blog directory eg. mysite.com/blog/

I am siding more towards the 2nd option as I will have a squeeze page as the static homepage for my website sitting there collecting leads for me. This would leave the blog being installed under a sub directory, which will make things easier for me if I have to edit any raw html or move files around.

I guess some advice couldn't hurt me, so forum, hit me with what you got

It really is good to be back here.
All the best for 2011.

Thanks,
Matt

If the homepage is always going to be static content, that sounds like a good idea. On the other hand, you could run different promotions through the blog, and build a following through readership.

Hi Matt,

I'd recommended installing it in the root directory and customizing a page for your squeeze page and setting that up as your homepage.

The reason I like to do it this way is for better SEO results. When a new post/page is created it won't have that extra "/blog/" in the url.

My 2 cents,

Thanks John,

You've backed up my initial thoughts - although I must admit I completely ruled out how it would affect SEO (forgot completely :s)

Matt.
