Can someone explain pingbacks to me?

Okay so I have been in the wonderful world of wordpress for almost a week now. First off, OMG the search engine traffic started flooding in today. I've had like 20 people come from search engines! It's still a teeeny tiny percentage of my traffic, but considering I would go weeks without a single search engine reader...I'm super excited.

Secondly, all of a sudden I'm getting pingbacks? Like this deal here:
Camera Accessories Up To 90% Off at Amazon!

I let them all through (akismet caught them...that's another thing, a LOT more spam on wordpress. Never had spam on blogger), but should I not have? I guess I'm not sure how this works. They all seem to be from different ranking type sites?

Help?

Okay it's getting absolutely ridiculous now. There are over 40 pingbacks sitting in my akismet que thingie right now....
I don't know what to do! Do I approve them all?

You should delete them!

If you approve them you do nothing than linking back to sites that you don't know.
