As long as you aren't using the same IP as the IP that your site is listed on their is no problem at all.

Otherwise, I would be checking my competitors ranking for every word in the world around the clock. I would dedicate a data center to checking ranks just to lower my competitors ranks. In fact, I would check every web site in the world, so that my site was the only site that was not penalized.

Nothing to be worried about. Google will just send a CAPTCHA for you to answer due to your excessive queries that bring the impression of using automated softwares.
