Which is better social bookmarking or social networking?

I am fairly new to the world of search engine optimization and was looking for some guidance from you professionals. I am looking to learn about SEO online. I have so far learned about a variety of SEO services like article writing, article submission squid etc. I have also been able to utilize these services to great effect. I am now looking at the options of social bookmarking and social networking. What is the difference between these two? Can someone please shed some light on this? I would greatly appreciate your comments and take them into account during site optimization.

Ideally, combining both would be best. Personally, I find them both to be way to time consuming, so I use a few tools to automate some of the work and try to balance my time with other IM tasks.

Social Bookmarking - submitting the site to various sites like facebook, ezine, twitter, digg, stumble etc in oder to get backlinks or to share the interesting articles with your profile.

Social Networking - it deals with direct sharing of links that are submitted in sites with others in order to drive traffic for ur website.

as SEO analyst I encourage you to use social bookmarking rather than Social Networking because Social Bookmarking gives u backlinks and improves you blog's visibility to people while Social Networking traffic will reduce your CTR ratings, but it can be hands on few occassions as well like top blogs like mashable, lifehacker rely on Social Networking only.

If I were you I would focus on Link building and social networking alone. Social Bookmarking seems to have lost if particularly after Panda so even though you can be sure to get links but they won't really really help your site in the rankings as much as they used to.

Jokes apart what you really need to focus on after Panda is the quality of the links rather than the quantity.
Panda will punish all links and sites that are spammy and if your site is one of them then it might spell bad news. Social Media is still free from such spammy content and is a better way of getting traffic to your site.
