Default SEO Experts - Rip Apart My Strategy!

Dear SEO Experts

Imagine you were asked by a friend to do some SEO work for his up and coming dog food site.

He had not yet made the site, but he had picked out his lucrative and targeted keywords.

His keywords are (hypothetical):


dog food
food for dog
dog treats
natural dog food
organic dog chow
vegetarian dog food
diet dog food



How would you structure his site, and what would your SEO routine be?


From what I have learned about SEO, I would put it all on a wordpress blog.

I would try to focus the home page around the theme -- the core term,
which is Dog Food.

I would then make separate pages for each of the terms listed above, and I would put
content on those pages (about 500 words) with a decent keyword density. I'd have the keyword int he title, title tag, and all that stuff.

I'd then build tons of links to these subpages. I'd make sure each subpage also links back
to the main page with DOG FOOD related anchor text.

Eventually, the main page would rank for Dog Food and the subpages would rank for their respective terms. Over time, the site would gain authority and the home page would also rank for those terms, correct?

Is this a good strategy?

How would you improve it?

I can say that it's a great strategy Improving it would depend on how you choose the sites where you'll get links from (authority). Anyway, just to add something to your strategy, you can also build links pointing to your homepage with all your targeted lucrative keywords, and I suggest that you choose keywords smartly for the homepage, like surrounding your main keyword "dog food" with support keywords to help boost the rankings of the main keyword.

I think that will be helpful to your campaign.

Also, focus on targeting long tail keywords for your subpages, since longtails are the ones that can really drive traffic with buying intent.

I guess that was good keyword that you can use to start optimize you website, so start doing link building such as blog commenting and forum posting which is also good in getting backlinks.

Also, sprinkle some LSI (Latent Semantic Index) keywords in your articles. How do you find these? Look at related searches and Google Suggestions when you type in the search textbox.

Great strategy, stick with it and don't fizzle out!

Keep this strategy going strong until you make it, a lot of people give up after they don't see instant results but patience is a huge part of SEO and your strategy (and followup comments) are gold for anyone who didn't know this stuff already!

Seriously, this post should be a sticky. Finally, someone who 'gets' SEO.

Now, as mentioned above, you need to concentrate and refine the offpage SEO aspect and know how to create links and attraction to your site.

Nice strategy! Make sure you build many strong backlinks and you'll be good.
Keyword density isn't a major player anymore.

Thanks a lot everyone for the kind words. I didn't find my strategy too unique or too special. but I appreciate the nice words.

To further fine tune the method, I'd also create Wordpress categories. I'd then post posts in each category, and aim the posts at the the pages I am trying to rank.

That way I'd include an element of freshness to the website (and silos also). I'd also plug in social media plugins to allow customer interaction.

On every page I'd have a small call to action to go to my sales page.

I'd also add stuff like statcounter plugin to really feel out which pages are ranking and for which terms. Once I'd gather this data I'd then build links to these pages that are ranking high. I'd keep track of it all via market samurai.

Does anyone have any more feedback on this?

The HTML text on a page was once the center of keyword optimization activities. Metrics such
as keyword density and keyword saturation were used to measure the perfect level of keyword
usage on a page. To the search engines, however, text in a document, particularly the frequency
with which a particular term or phrase is used, has very little impact on how happy a searcher
will be with that page.

In fact, quite often a page laden with repetitive keywords attempting to please the engines will
provide a very poor user experience; thus, although some SEO professionals today do claim to
use term weight (a mathematical equation grounded in the real science of information retrieval)
or other, more “modern” keyword text usage methods, nearly all optimization can be done
very simply.


The best way to ensure that you’ve achieved the greatest level of targeting in your text for a
particular term or phrase is to use it in the title tag, in one or more of the section headings
(within reason), and in the copy on the web page. Equally important is to use other related
phrases within the body copy to reinforce the context and relevance of your main phrase for
the page.


Although it is possible that implementing more instances of the key phrase on the page may
result in some increase in ranking, this is increasingly unlikely to have an impact as you add
more instances of the phrase. In addition, it can ruin the readability of some documents, which
could hurt your ability to garner links to your site. Furthermore, testing has shown that
document text keyword usage is such a small factor with the major engines that even one link
of very low quality is enough to outweigh a page with perfect keyword optimization versus
one that simply includes the targeted phrase naturally on the page (two to 10 times, depending
on length).


This doesn’t mean keyword placement on pages is useless—you should always strive to include
the keyword you’re targeting at least a few times depending on document length—but it does
mean that aiming for “perfect” optimization on every page for every term is overkill and largely
unnecessary.
