Default With Yahoo killing delicious, are you rethinking your Web 2.0 strategy?

The rumors about Yahoo shutting down delicious are running wild today.

It's got me asking the question: How much stock you put into your Web 2.0 profiles?

Most of these companies have yet to turn a profit, their valuations are based on user bases and revenue projections. How many working hours are you investing in building links or improving profiles on websites that could easily shut down someday?

I would imagine there are many people who have invested hundreds if not thousands of hours building links on delicious alone.

Although we need many of these sites to be where the users are I thought I could make some suggestions on ways to protect yourself from wasting time.
  1. Install your own URL shortener (why leave something as important as redirecting your links in the hands of third-party?)
  2. Start creating killer content (good content gets linked automatically)
  3. Try not to put too many eggs in one basket (I imagine there's some dude that was killing it on delicious who is losing sleep right now)

Do you think we put too much stock in unprofitable companies? Or am I crazy?

I think as long as we need authority sites like this to stay relevant in social media and serps, people will alway need to waste time on these sites.

Unless of course you have deep pockets

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but the main Web 2.0 properties I use to drive traffic are Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter. The closing of this site doesn't really effect me, but I guess it might severely effect others?

I've been thinking of that a lot. Years ago, I had a three-letter .cc domain that I let go several years back. Should have kept it.

Haven't found a short domain so far that I like enough to use as a shortener.

I think about it all the time, but so far it's been working quite well. There will always be emerging technology (ie mobile) and more opportunities as the unprofitable, old models continue to fade away.

I utilize most of the larger social networks, but any one of them could go away and it wouldn't keep me up at night.

There are 2 things that will keep your business going...NOT relying on any one thing too much AND a big bank account in case you get blindsided. I prefer both. It's tough not to rely on something a lot when it's working, but you gotta do your best.

Brad I agree

I think the best approach with these web 2 sites is to get links/traffic from many of the them - like a net of links flowing to your website without favoring any one site

They are closing down Yahoo video too...

(I posted this in another "Yahoo is closing Delicious" thread and the entire thread was deleted. Don't know why as this is important news for IM)

I try not to get to worked up about shut downs like this. I figure it's part of the job and it's going to happen, so just keep moving forward.

However ... I'll admit that I'd be a bit worried if Youtube, Aweber, Hostgator, or a couple of the big article sites shut their doors.

But then again, there's a massive amount of other targeted niche sites, forums, etc just begging for us to place ads on them, so...

So, what you're saying is Don't rely on other websites, invest in your own.

Synthesize me, And reboot, I need to start again, I need to make it different
