If the competition has higher index count, should one strive to get more pages indexed than him?

No, not really. I've beat competition for the same keywords, they had thousands of pages indexed, I had less than 100 pages indexed. I do heavy on-page seo + high PR backlinks. Not every keyword/competition is the same, look at the rest of page #1 in Google SERPs & see how strong the other 9 competition is. |

Agree with what Yukon is saying. A high index count doesn't necessarily mean you will rank for your terms or that you will become an authority. If you DO really feel you need to build more pages then you can write 'support' articles and interlink these to your targeted keyword phrases on your site. |

Index count is not a good stat to use for competition analysis. The one secondary area where having a high index count helps is with internal anchor text linking. If your site has 1000s of pages that have a great internal linking structure, then it will boost your rankings. |

That being said however...a site with only one page may have a problem competing for a competitive term compared to those with hundreds or even thousands of indexed pages with adequate on-page SEO and internal linking. | |
