Separate Site Better Than Site Within A Site -SEO

Hi there,

We have a site, www.main_site.com that is ranked highly for our geographic area. We are a consumer services company, not an IM per se.

We recently opened a new office in another geographic location.

We set up the new location site as a "subset" of the main site as in www.main_site.com/new_site_location/

Which is better for promoting the new site - the setup above or setting it up on an entirely new domain as in www.new_site_location.com?
