Embedding excerpts from movies?

I posted an excerpt from a couple movies to my You Tube account, as I was going to use them in a blog as part of making a point. Then I got an email from You Tube saying "hey you have copy-righted stuff on your channel, you don't need to DO anything, but you better think about it buster," or something like that. They haven't stopped the ability to view those excerpts or anything though.

And yet the other day my voice sounded a bit like Tuco in "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", all scratchy from a cold I had, and so I went to You Tube to check if any of that movie was up, and I could compare. Sure enough, the entire movie was up there. There are a lot of entire movies posted on You Tube, with many thousands of views.

So can I use a short excerpt on my blog, or will I run afoul of the law, so to speak?
