Default Help or Hurt: Creating a Link Network of Your Related Sites

Just launched about 15-20 sites that are related but each have their own subniche. wondering if anyone has experience with creating a link network by offering links to the user to your other related sites. as far as SEO and google goes, have you seen evidence that this help rankings. that the backlinks you get are useful to rankings? or the opposite. that your rankings are hurt? the sites are spread across 3 servers, which i have to believe would help if anything.

i cant see google hurting you for offering more information that the user may want. it is not forced or imposed, just offered for the curious. again, this is not a dogtraining site, linking to a car parts site, more like a golden retreiver site linked to a poodle site....so...thoughts?
