Your blog can be installed in "blog" directory then you can have other landing pages like the one you mentioned which is the root domain catsarecool.com Your blog can anchor link to the landing page in content and category. You should not damage your SEO. |

if you do a massive change like you are wanting to do, you can expect a drop in the serps, it will take more efforts to get back to your #1 position.

Why would adding a blog to an ecom site drop your site in the serps? Wouldn't it add additional keyword definitive backlinks? We have a separate blog site and an ecom site, and we're thinking of adding a blog to our ecom site with different posts than our separate blog site. How would we drop in the serps by adding a blog to our ecom site? |

Google ranks at a PAGE level not at the Site level. So adding a blog to an ecommerce site isn't going to hurt anything. If it is going to add value for your visitors then do it. |

wait, if you are trying to add a blog to a directory then you will be fine, i thought you were trying to say you were going to change your ranking page to a blog, if you leave the page that is ranking now the way it is you will be fine.

I think you are saying you have a wordpress blog at your root directory, and the homepage ranks for your targeted keyword phrase. If so, replacing the homepage with an ecommerce sales page will not affect your rankings (little or none) if you do it correctly. Keep in mind that 90% of your ranking factors are external (backlinks). There are very few IMPORTANT factors on your actual web page (meta tags & textual content). If you make sure to keep the keyword phrase (you are ranking well for) in the meta tags & textual content of the page you should be fine. I have done this dozens of times over the past several years and it makes little or no difference to your rankings when done right. You may see some minor fluctuation in your ranking, but that's all. |

Agree with Dave, but you most likely see some fluctuation in rankings. We've switched several sites and they all see a slight drop for a couple of weeks.
