short keywords contained in longtail keywords

If for example I wanted to rank for both "taco meat" and "gourmet taco meat" would a backlink with the anchor text "gourmet taco meat" help in both of those search ranking since it contains both of them, or does it have to be an exact match?

If it helps with both, then running with the same example, if "taco meat" was my primary goal, would it be best to start out getting backlinks with longer terms like:"gourmet taco meat" "kosher taco meat" "spicy taco meat" etc which all contain the main keyterm and thus would get traffic from both their specific terms as well as the main term?

Hope this makes sense, I'm trying to work out the best strategies for the sites I'm working on.

yes using "gourmet taco meat" will increase your ranking for just "taco meat" also.
Ive noticed this first hand with sites i have built.
I noticed this as in your example i never built 1 anchor link for just "taco meat" yet the serps getting going up over time

Yea this is true. It will have an effect on your rankings, but if you use the base anchor taco meat it will be more effective. But I just do a bunch of variations of it with the base anchor in it, to target many keywords, while still targeting the main one.

Keeping with your example, I would do 80% of my backlinks with the Anchor text 'Taco Meat', and the other 20% mixed between 'Gourmet Taco Meat', 'Kosher Taco Meat', etc.

Perfect! Thanks for the answers, clarification, and advice! That is what I was hoping and I thought it would make sense - because in reality the likelihood of everyone linking to your site with the exact anchor text isn't very probable.

That works nicely too because I am hoping to get traffic from some of the easier variations of my keyword as I work on ranking in for the main one and targetting it like that will help with both while still making the links seem more natural.

I like the 80/20 idea I will probably go with that or something close to it. I don't think the variations I'm looking at will require too many links to rank for them, so I should be able to target several of them...

This is kinda exciting for me to be learning and watching my new site(s) climb in the search engines. Wish I had started learning this stuff sooner!
