Default Edu Backlinks - Waiting Period vs Non Waiting Period

Need some input here Warriors. I have heated debate going on with a couple of friends about;

" Is it best to wait 2 weeks, 1 week, 5 days, 3 days, etc., prior to actually putting links into your profile on the .EDU sites."

If you would please provide some detail and reasoning behind your opinion. Perhaps, if possible, some references to back you up.

Depends on the site and how active their adminstrators are I would say.

But the longer you wait the less likely you will get deleted OVERALL. That can't be argued.

Are you doing this manually? Why wouldn't you do it immediately?

Thanks.

That is actually a part of our debate. I'm thinking with manual registration, one should be able to leave a link immediately. But the other 2 are saying wait.

Thanks Aaron,

I hear what your saying, are you basing this on the TOS of the sites, fear of looking spammy or from personal experience of manual backlinking? Not trying to put you on the spot, but I would really love to hear your thinking.

If they're in a niche that I'm in I recommend waiting at least a year or two so that they won't be 'sandboxed'.

My take is that any authority site where just anyone can get a link either (a) won't be an authority site for long; or (b) will have the value of it's outgoing links discounted or removed entirely. Basically, don't worry about chasing the .edu pot 'o gold but do things that will secure stable authority links for your site(s).

I think you should go for it, and make worthwhile contributions.

That is what I would do, why not? If they ban you then create a new account. lol.

the .EDU may be a pot o gold, but there are quite a few that swear by it. That is the intent of my post; to get as many thoughts as I can from those who have used or not used them.

Thanks to you guys for your thoughts.

I use them, but the links I get are typically unique to my sites and are most often unsolicited. For example, one of my sites in a business niche has a number of .edu links from professors' or students' web pages as a reference. These are typically more valued links than a profile page on a poorly moderated school forum or a comment on a free-for-all student blog stuck between auto-spammed "Great Post" comments with links to cheap male enhancement products or porn sites.

I also value getting links from other established authority sites, like CNN or MSN. It's not the domain extension that's valuable but the authority of the site and page linking to you.
