What's the point in doing seo on a locked page? Unless you have a signup form for new members on the page, telling them to register first. |

Experts Exchange is a good example of the importance of using SEO for a membership site (locked pages). If you show a searcher that you have the solution to their problem then there is a chance that they might sign up and become a paying member. They provide the Google Bot access to the membership area so questions and solutions are indexed but the data is presented to the user in a way that the solution is hidden from obvious view. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page you can see the complete solution but if you are unaware you might sign-up. This is like a white-hat version of cloaking. (The solution is only publicly viewable via a search engine). Access to the other content on the site is protected like normal. There are also forums that give the Google Bot access to index their sites but to view the thread you must register. If the title and description of the search result is well written then once again the user is likely to register with the forum to get their answer. Marketing takes over from here. |

Scoopy, they (Experts Exchange was our example) are using organic traffic (SEO/SEM) to get memberships and other sites do the same thing. You don't have to use organic traffic but that goes with any type of web site. So no, Google and other search engines do not hate membership sites if you set them up properly. |

They present the data so that you have to scroll a LONG way to get to the answer, hoping that people don't realise and join up to get the answer. Even if people see the answer they may get hooked and sign up regardless.

Like the others have posted it's border line scam. They use the page to get ranked in Google, then display the page to people as If they have to subscribe for $29.95 / Month when the actual content is at the bottom of a mile long scroll. If you click this link you won't see the answer to their question. Play IPod via USB through Car Stereo USB port? : ipod, usb, car, play, stereo, CD & MP3 Players If you click the same link in Google (first link in SERP), they will display the answer way at the bottom of the page. car site:www.experts-exchange.com - Google Search What they are doing is checking the referrer to see If it's Google or some other site (Warrior Forum) then display content based on how the reader landed on the page. They are trying to please Google, & make a dime at the same time.

| Now, if you or I do that on a site you can bet that site will be deindexed ASAP by the search quality team as soon as they figure out what's going on.

Here is what works for me. Build a membership site and also add free stuff. I add 90% membership content and 10% free content. You have to add a ****-load of content, but it works. Google ranks ya and people want to join.
