Default Will a 301 redirect pass over Google ranking power?

Hey All,

Example for you:

ClientA owns JoePetFood.com and is ranked for #2 on Google for 'Chicago Pet Food.'

ClientA then sells company to ClientB and ClientB owns MyAnimalSupplies.com which is currently in the bottom of Google.

If a 301 redirect is done on JoePetFood.com, will the link juice and Google ranking of JoePetFood.com transfer over to MyAnimalSupplies.com...allowing it to essentially move up to the first page of Google (assuming plenty of unique content exists on the site)

Or will it just send the visitors from JoePetFood.com and the PR of the site will die with it?

I'm also assuming post-301 redirect that JoePetFood.com will plummet in the Google rankings?

I've heard mixed opinions on this, just wondering if anyone knows/has done this and gotten positive results...if not...what would be suggested?

Thanks!

~Dexx

Hi Dexx & slipangle,

Each page will be ranked on it's own merits. Part of Google's ranking algorithm is based on on-page factors and part of it is based on the influence of backlink signals (influence, relevance and authority collectively called "link juice"). By doing a properly formatted 301 Permanent Redirect you will allow most (minus a degrading factor) of the link juice to pass to the landing pages those redirects point toward.

Since rankings are not based exclusively on backlink signals the rankings may not be the same. They could end up lower, or higher, depending on the on-page signals combined with the link juice and relevancy of those redirected backlinks.

That is an interesting dilemna - as consolidation happens SEO is important.
