Default How to change / replace web pages without affecting existing search engine rankings

I built a site for a friend a few years back with virtually no SEO applied to it. It's managed over time to achieve some ranking and amazingly does get some useful traffic.

I'm now building a shopping cart for this site using Actinic and we're thinking of replacing the existing website with this shopping cart completely. What is the best approach here to make sure that we at least keep our existing rankings?

Should we simply use the existing page names for each page within the shopping cart or leave the existing site intact and link to the new shopping cart from there?

Not sure how to approach this and avoid losing search engine rankings so hope someone has some experience of doing this!

Cheers,

Alpinenut.
