Getting Blogger Sites to Rank?

Is it more or less difficult to get Blogger to rank in Google (over a custom .com)? Does Google penalize for this?

Why would the penalize you for using their service. Google likes when people use their services. It only makes their brand that much stronger. However be careful when using blogger. To many links in your posts will cost you your google account. So personally I think it is better to go with hosting the site yourself then using them but that is just me.

I'm not really looking to get backlinks from the blog, just want bragging rights to get a blogger blog to rank. The term I am going after has less than 100 searches a day so it's really low volume.

Getting a blogger blog to rank is actually easier for it will already have some links to you in that case. If you are just wanting to see if it is easier or harder it is actually easier in the long run.

I have run auto blogs through blogger. I have also started a few linking blogs. If and when you start your blogger blog follow a few simple things and it will get up to the top in no time.

Write and submit a post a day for the first week. Then atleast 1 post a week after that. Build backlinks as you normally would and you should see your blogger blog racing to the top of the serps in no time. Just remember though you are going to be limited to an extent by using blogger. But it is easy to get to the top with blogger since you will be using bloggers pr to help give you that first boost. If I remember correctly blogger itself is a pr7. That does not mean your blog will start off as a pr7 it just means that it will have more potential visitors because of bloggers pr since anyone just browsing bloggers blogs will see your site. I dont think so.Still you will find lots of blogger blogs just dominating the top position of google for different well known keywords.

Blogger is a great way to get started. Since Op has found a niche which will get him 100 searches a day (which the op feels is very low), if properly monetized using adsense and others can be flipped for a low 4 figure sum on flippa. But you cannot flip blogger blogs as they do not belong to you. So having your own domain and hosting is recommended.

Ranking isn't a huge problem as long as you know how to do good SEO. There isn't any advantage or disadvantage to them although tough or lacking competition may give you a different impression sometimes.

However, Google's anti-spam 'bot is very aggressive and hamhanded in it's seek and destroy mission to remove spammy blogs. It is very likely that any blog you make for marketing purposes will be disabled and deleted sooner or later. Even innocent unmonetized, un-SEO'ed, personal blogs get wiped out with alarming frequency. I consider it like placing flyers on cars at the mall. It may work for a while but sooner or later the security guard will show up and run you off.

Some hard then a site but not impossible.Do off-page activities in good way ,you will get good ranking.

I consider my blogger blogs a compliment to my other domains. I will write content on them and tweet about them, and link from them to my more important domains.
