With niche sites, have you guys had better and/or quicker rankings with exact match or aged domains?

I've got about 40 micro niche sites. Some have aged domains with 1 word of the usually 3-word-keyword-phrase that are a few years old, and some have exact match domains (EMD's) that are brand new, and I've had varying results. Some of the EMD's rank quickly and high on page 1 with little effort, while some rank slowly and poorly. Likewise, some of the EMD's go quickly and high, while some are the opposite. Would love to get some opinions on this. Thanks.
