Hi Mike,

I think your assertion is not entirely accurate. You assert that it "is essential for the visibility of a site by search engine crawler..." which is not really true. It is helpful, but certainly not "essential".

There are many websites, that are indexed and ranking well, that have never had an XML sitemap. Modern search engines are capable of following links from wherever they find them. A sitemap file can help them but certainly isn't absolutely necessary as implied by the term "essential".

XML sitemaps aren't necessary but they are so easy to create there's no reason not to have one. You can get one quickly with http://www.xml-sitemaps.com or if you have a wordpress with "google xml sitemaps".

I think he means that the xml is your website....and finding out about your site.
Think he's got a simple sitemap webpage version in mind, not the xml one.

See, I can be nice. I guess I'm nice because I agree that you only need one
if google will have a hard time burrowing down in your site for a webpages.

But I always say, if google has a "hard" time burrowing down into your website,
then what the heck do you think your visitors are doing?

If you have a huge, huge website, you may want some auto-generated xml sitemap.

I would also assume that if one had a 50,000+ website, you had better be on google's
constant crawl list to begin with. Warrior forum is good example of a constantly crawled
site.

Sitemaps are a way to tell Google about pages on your site we might not otherwise discover.Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that Google knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that may not be discoverable by Google's normal crawling process.

I believe you are incorrect in the context of this thread. AN XML sitemap is a file that contains URLs without anchor text.

Perhaps you were speaking of an HTML "site map" (two words) which is not the topic of this thread. These are often confused by folks, probably because they have related functions and are pronounced the same way.
