Onpage SEO - Dont waste your time without doing these

Before you begin doing offpage SEO , please go ahead and optimize your on-page

Below are some of the steps that I can recollect at the moment. Please add any that you think might be appropriate

H1 tags

Your headings in the post should have H1 tags and should be keyword optimized

Title tags

All your page titles should mention your target keyword Dont use lengthy titles
HTML code cleanup/CSS standards

Validate if your site meets CSS , html standards
try this Multipage Validator for an xHTML site validation
Sitemaps
Sitemaps help google bot to index the pages faster

Robots.txt

Use robots.txt to let the search robot know about trivial pages that need not be indexed
e.g: user registration page
Image optimization

All your images should be keyword optimized. Some of my websites get traffic through the images on my website. Check the alt tag

Internal linking

Check on your internal linking strategy. Link all your pages in optimal manner

keyword density

Dont overuse the target keyword on a page

broken links

Are there 404s ? correct them and route all the 404s to a nice page
Google webmastertools will show you all the 404s

duplicate content

Do you have duplicate titles?
Do you have duplicate URLs?

You could use canonical tag or 301/302 redirects to correct the situation
meta tags
Although meta information is not considered as a ranking signal , better have one for each page to entice visitors

study site index

site:warriorforum.com on google search
will give all the pages in the index . So , study all the pages of your site in google index. Is some thing wrong there? Go and fix it

keyword cannabolization
Keyword cannabilization deals with multiple urls targeting same keyword. This can be solved by reoptimizing the site architecture

site architecture

Site architecture is really important as it helps google bot to rank the pages better. Dont have too many levels and make it look complicated

One other thing I missed out is page load time.. If your website is too slow, please work on tuning it. Google openly announced that it is one of the ranking signal

Great post for newbies to bookmark (or anyone else as a checklist), also that Affilorama link ^ is a great resource too. I started IM there, very friendly environment.

Also, might be worth mentioning to also use H2 tags within the body for subheadings that contain your keywords.

Naturally scatter your keywords within the body (between 1%-4%). Try to get it in the first 50 words and last 50 words if you can too.

SEO on page checklist is great it really helps a newbie to check all on page seo parameter. Page loading time is also consider as a important factor in SEO. you can decrease page loading time by using low resolution images.

Don't forget:
Add your keyword to your title and use it in the beginning. I still follow on site keyword density in an article.

I include the keyword in the first sentence of the first paragraph, 3-4 more times (bold, italicize and underline it) and also link back to the main domain name as well for further on site optimization. Matt Santi

Useful posts and replies. By looking at pages and websites having hundreds or even thousands of backlinks, you will find them still being very powerful from on page optimization aspects. I believe title tag is the most significant of them all because Google and other search engines pay attention to the tag too much to discover what points can be expected to crawl on pages.

Thanks for the list. I'm just curious if everybody is using .htaccess. Can anyone shed light about this. How does it work, etc.? I heard someone said before that if you mistakenly change a character on it, you might destroy the whole website. I think that is an exaggeration, right?
