Is theme sponsoring still worth it ?

Been thinking about sponsoring a few WP themes, but I'm not sure it's still worth it. Has anyone had good experience with this link building strategy lately ?

Yes. It is worth it, if much more people are likely to use the theme you are sponsoring.

I choose only good looking and functional themes, but there's no guarantee if they'l be downloaded and used at all. I'll submit to all possible theme directories, but that's as much as I can do. THat's why I wanted to see if someone is willing to share his recent hands-on experience.

You would increase chances if the themes you want to sponsor have something to offer that has not been out for the umptiest time already. From what I see we have an over supply of wordpress themes and unless a new theme has something about it that I haven´t seen already over and over before there is no chance i would pick it up.
