Default Duplicate Content, Archives and Categories

How do I prevent content duplication across my blog, when my blog has categories and archives pages? What is the best practice for this sort of thing?

If your blog is WordPress, there is a plugin called All in One SEO Pack.
This plugin allows you to designate noindex for archives, categories, etc. which will help minimize duplicate content.

It is a well known plugin and a quick search on the plugin's name will give you plenty of results to optimally configure the plugin.

Another way to manage this is by (correctly) using the cannonical tag.

If you read Google Webmaster Guidelines you'll see that they know how blogging platforms such as WordPress work and don't count the same content on the same website accessed via different URLs as duplicate.

In addition, using the Canonical tag (available in the All-in-one-SEO pack) indicates to the search engines the primary URL of each article. This will reduce the dilution effect of having the same content on your site indexed via multiple URLs.

Cheers,

Martin.

Personally I remove archives and I stop tags or categoried being indexed, but not both. Why? Because I rank well for my category or tag pages with some of my sites.

Google knows how to handle wordpres,, but if you are pushing things, then covering your proverbial a bvit can help. I use yoasts SEO plugin as that covers everything, rather than all in one seo which is more limited.
