Understanding Links

Whats the difference between links that are placed on a website using hypertext.....ie...www.whatever.com......does that just mean it a nofollow? and then some links that are reciprocal where you have to copy and paste HTML code in the page source. Please explain this to me.

No. Whether the hypertext links on a page are do-follow or no-follow (though, to me, it has absolutely no relevance at all and I don't even bother to check them) is determined by the page's owner/webmaster.

It's widely agreed by everyone in the SEO field that reciprocal links (site A links to site B and site B links back to site A) are of comparatively little SEO value. Even a search-engine's algorithm can see at a glance that they may, in a sense, be "incentivised"/"bought" links rather than "real" ones.

Alexa is correct, dofollow vs nofollow is determined by the website owner. If the link ISN'T "hypertext" (aka an HTML link that you can click on), then it almost definitely isn't dofollow.. it won't be counted as a link because it would just be text.

Reciprocal links are when you link to someone and they link back to you. This is better than nothing in terms of backlinks, but it won't give you nearly as much SEO benefit as a one-way link to your site.

Thanks Alexa, I still dont quite understand the difference between the 2 backlinks mentioned. Why do you use HTML code in your "page source" for a link to someone else? Why not just use a hyperlink on his page pointing to you and he do the same to mine?
