Default Need Expertise Advice on a Keyword

For the keyword "dc dc converter," would someone evaluate how hard would it be for a PR4 9 year old web site to rank on page 1? What about number one?

On top of this so I don't have to ask numerous times - How do you guys usually evaluate your competition?

Thanks!

I'm no expert but I do understand how to evaluate a keywords difficulty in terms of ranking page 1. Doing a simple check for top ten you have mainly sites with pr 3-6 with age on all of them. Wikipedia may be a tad difficult to dethrone but with consistent linking and a few edu/gov links you can have top top in a reasonable about of time.

Three of those top ten sites have thousands of links just to its single ranking page, so you can expect to build a very diverse linking scheme. But it needs to be consistent and strong for a while.

Next thing to consider is your site. Use yahoo site explorer to see how many links you have. Any edu/gov links? You will need what your competition is doing, plus some more, and three of them have edu/gov links. You have plenty of age on your site so I say to build a page with perfect on-page SEO; density between 1-3%, h1, h2, h3 with keyword, nice lengthy post with keyword sprinkled in to make it nicely readable etc.

You have pr and you have age. Now you just have to make sure off and on-page SEO are in line. Just begin building lots of links. No telling how long it will take but you will surely break top ten with consistent effort

This is your competition:

(I do all pages for wikipedia (Yahoo Explorer) since they go heavy on internal linking with anchor-text)

1) http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC-to-DC_converter&bwm=i&bwmo=

2) http://www.google.com/search?sclient=psy&hl=en&source=hp&q=%22dc+dc+conv erter%22+site:wikipedia.org&btnG=Search

3) http://www.google.com/search?sclient=psy&hl=en&source=hp&q=intitle:dc+dc +converter+site:wikipedia.org&btnG=Search

4) http://www.google.com/search?sclient=psy&hl=en&source=hp&q=inurl:dc+dc+c onverter+site:wikipedia.org&btnG=Search

Also look at the internal links that contain the keyword "DC Converter" inside the wikipedia Title. Check those backlinks see how strong those extra internal pages are, & how relevant to the keyword.

Honestly speaking I don't take a great deal of time evaluating my competition as I am to busy outranking them when I get started. With the type of site you are talking about I could probably have you on the first page within a month and in the top 3 if not the top 1 within 90 days. I'm being very liberal on that educated guess as I prefer to under promise and over deliver.

Time is not the issue to be concerned with - how you go about building your backlink strategy is what matters.

Only one site in the top ten has all their on-page SEO in place and that site's at #9 with a PR3 on a less than a year old site (with 63 BL to that page). That site shouldn't be difficult to bump off at all.

The rest are mostly aged domains with some good authority, but not all. I think it may take you a little bit of time and some effort on building backlinks but I don't see why you can get up to the top of the rankings.
