I wasn't sure what else to call this other than not ranking "properly" but here goes. I have a site, say widgets.com for example and on there I have a post about green widgets and the url to this post is widgets.com/green-widgets. Now this post and url are indexed in Google and are ranking but when I type green widgets into a Google search, the url that shows up for my site is widgets.com not widgets.com/green-widgets. I would have thought that widgets.com/green-widgets would have ranked better for the keyword "green widgets" rather than just the widgets.com page. Any idea why it's ranking like this or is it typical and I should just wait longer and eventually Google will figure it out and set it right? the site and posts have been live and indexed for over 1 month now. Thanks for any insight you guys can provide |

Google will always show what it thinks is most appropriate for users in each given search, and that would not necessarily be the page that we are trying to rank for a particular keyword. That's just how it is. You can try to raise the ranking of the 'green widgets' page by making the content very high quality and very highly relevant to the keyword, as well as linking to it from other highly relevant web pages, so that Google will perceive it as more relevant than the homepage for the chosen keyword.
