Default CHALLENGE for Article Marketers and Those with Duplicate Content Fears

Let's see if we can examine this issue, without driving down tangents fueled by speculation and opinion.

I know from reading this forum that many people consider EzineArticles (EZA) to be an authority website. I don't consider article directories to be authority websites, but I will grant EZA an authority status for this post alone.

What I would like to do is to document "Authority websites" that have some "Duplicate Content" on them.

Don't just say "this site in an authority website, and it might have duplicate content on it".

Let's take a few minutes to prove the facts.

For the sake of evidence-gathering, let's follow a format:

Quote:
Domain Name - PageRank

Niche

The URL for at least one page on the site that contains content that we know was published elsewhere.

Then use Google to query the "article title" (in quotes), to see how many copies of that "actual" article Google has in its public index. Count a few of the pages that actually have the article on it, rather than just a mention of the title.

(In some cases, we may have to Google a sentence in the article to find the exact article.)

Most of us know it happens, but let us document the evidence.

Quote:
Rules:

* Only document Authority websites as sites with a PR3 or higher.

* Do not count article directories as an Authority Website, with the exception of EZA.
As a group, we can do so much more on this, than I as an individual can do.

I am going to post this now, and then come back with a few of my own examples.

For the record, I am not at all worried about duplicate content. But I thought this might be a good exercise to let people cut through the BS to get to the truth of the issue.

As of this posting, these two instances of the article rank at #12 and #13, respectively, for the phrase "Google Sucks", even for broad match.

Most authority news sites are stuffed with 'duplicate content'.

Just look at The Huffington Post, for example - you know, the site that's just been sold for $315 million (PR 8).

Taking one of their articles at random:

Dr. Philip Neches: Resolving the Mortgage Mess

The Huffington Post ranks number one for the phrase "Resolving the mortgage mess" immediately followed by 13 different sites all ranking for the same article phrase.

I don't have anything relevant to add other than I think this will be a great topic and hopefully put to rest all questions and concerns on a very important issue. I look forward to the upcoming posts and just wanted to thank the op and everyone for contributing to this very important topic.

I think this is one of the most useful posts on here!

I tried it out myself by going to one of the biggest authority sites on dogs dogbreedinfo.com. If you do any dog related sites or research, you know this site always comes up at the top of google and at one time it was in one of their adsense case studies as making $300 a day (that was years ago). It's a PR6.

I randomly picked an article from there (the article itself is a PR5) and searched google for a snippet from one of the sentences. 18 pages were returned, but in looking through them they all don't include the entire article but a paragraph or two (some actually look slightly spun).

Yeah, I think the fact that I just copied the first paragraph of one of those articles, and found it INDEXED in so many different Google results shows that duplicate content problems are really a myth. If you're worried, I've found that just changing the title of the same article will almost always get it indexed, and honestly that may not even be necessary.

The reason we should check each listing in Google is because many scraper sites will pull the first sentence, the first paragraph or the first few paragraphs from an article and post it.

Then those excerpts will link to the article at another location.

To get a clean test, we should not count those scraped excerpts on the article, but only count the article that is found in its full grandeur on a multitude of websites.

I did a search for one of mine that I know had been syndicated to several authority and geek sites. It turned up over 200 sites but I didn't get past the first page because the top results were plagiarised or badly spun copies. That cheesed me off so I tried another.

I did a sentence search from half way down the article and got 159 results and at least 40 are full articles. I know that not all of the pages use my title but a lot of the other lower PR sites do and they are still in the index. A point to be made here is that this article is nearly 3 years old and is still being syndicated and in it's original state.
