Hello Was wondering if and how the big boys backlink? You know; FaceBook, Youtube, twitter, Amazon, LinkedIn, eBay, Flickr, IMDB, Craigslist etc... Do these guys backlink? Did they ever backlink? And how? Reason im asking is because im considering a backlinking strategie for a new project im working on however if the site get big, real big. I dont want to get into any trouble. The backlinks i find are common in packages now days are profile links, sig links and blog comments. Can someone please comment. Cheers -Andrei |

Take Craigslist for example. It went viral because everyone told everyone that you could buy & sell stuff on Craigslist. If the site is good, it will get natural links from other people. Granted you should still do your own linkbuilding, but you'll have some help if you have a site that solves problems. | |

Most, if not all, these sites were pretty original, in that there was nothing like them around when they came out and then they caught on. Besides, if your site DOES become mega huge like these you've mentioned, there will be so many links to it that no one will know where the originating links came from. |

Andrei, the answer is simple: NO. Instead of doing the 'grunt' work, they focus on strategy. What that means is, in marketing terms "link bait". They focus on what makes them unique, what makes people talk about them. If your company, content or website is interesting and engaging enough - people will start talking about it anyway. Thus creating the backlinks for them. Focus on strategy and branding. Not on some lame SEO tricks. -Dave |

Thanks all. This is what i was thinking. Ive always been of the belief "Make your marketing good, but make your product better". If the product or service is great the need for marketing is less. Thanks all once again. The reason i asked was because the area im heading down has a lot of competition and i wanted a head start by getting some good search engine results. But you guys have whipped me back into my original thinking of 'screw the backlinks and seo for now, ill make my site awesome first'. Cheers -Andrei |
