Default Frequency and Length of Blog Posts

Hi guys
I've always been told to aim to have blog posts around 300-400 words. I could never find a legitimate reason for why this was.

Ive recently started a new blog, and Ideally i would like to make lots of 100 or so word entries.

Is there any difference in terms of SERPs if i make one 400 word post per day or four 100 word posts?

I have the home page of my blog set to show excerpts so it really wouldnt affect the length of the posts show on the home page.

Thanks for any help.

The main difference I see is that if you want your blog posts to rank well in Google, then 100 words is very little content, and 400-500 would be better. If you're not worried about getting top rankings and purely want to provide snippets of quality content, then adding posts of 100 words could be a good strategy.

One good benefit for your overall website that youd get from adding lots of small posts is that Google would see you site always has fresh content, so you'd get benefits from that...

I would RATHER get the top rankings. So i take it google actually distinguishes how broken up the content is? If not, how can they tell if the text it has not seen before is four new short posts or one new long one?

Bottom line is good content- at least 300 words, preferably 400-500 or more. I stick with 300 or so with some sites I'm just using for a backlink though.
