I have copied the website layout of my competitor,not everything word for word but reqrded everything,do you think this will affect my SERP and be penalized by google for this?

Yes, there was a massive update regarding duplicate content. Create unique content and Google will reward you more. (Use the search button to find threads discussing this topic).

I agree with InitialEffort here Google will reward unique content. However Its not that clear cut. You can see 100% duplicate content indexed instantly in newspapers for instance that is written by some news bureau and its indexed all over the place by 100 of different sites.

I am in a sales/product site. Basically I have copied the competitor layout that he has used but I have reworded everything,what do you suggest?Use a different layout etc?also I have to have it similar to my competitor since thats the best way for onpage SEO,let me know your thoughts
