Amazing! Hundreds of big companies are at this game. The article makes it sound like this co was unique but one effect of BH is that it has killed search quality on certain search phrases that should be obvious to anyone using google search, even if they don't know the technique.

I'm not sure it can be fixed until the day we have seriously good AI to detect the crap from the genuine sites.

Does a number make you rich?

Someone should try yukon's idea as a case study, you might have to get the new york times to report your competitor as well. At least now I know were the little drop in rankings I've been seeing comes from.

A few weeks ago i posted " Google Sucks, It needs to be Scrapped"....and this article shows it NICELY *why*.

Because $$$ (or budget on SEO), bluefart, crazy numbers of unnatural backlinks and manipulation is what dominates the search engines.

And almost ANY big company or top ranking site in whatever competitive niche knows that, don't you ever believe that the top rankers (with very few exceptions) got their rankings in natural and kosher ways. That's the reason why Google needs a kick in the *** since any such manipulation and "number of backlinks craze" shouldnt be possible in the first place!

And..we "all" play that game (need to play it) since otherwise we don't have a chance since we KNOW that our competitors do the same thing!

Looked at backlinks list. All wordpress sites very odd. I'd almost suspect some sort of hacking type thing.

Submitted a comment to one and it was moderated so it wasn't scrapebox and some didn't have comments enabled. Could have been a massive private network but unique url's. Some of them still appeared to have text links. One had an add for a link buying service that could have been it. Still was 100's of links for one subpage. They could have been spending millions if that was the case.

I guess they were a bit greedy and went for too many keywords but they and their SEO company were a bit unlucky to have been the "victims", the ones singled out.

Given the media storm, Google has to do something but it could have been any big company. But manipulation is the way things work right now and I suppose it is a case of riding the wave and going with the flow.

Can't say it better then this.

The world is going stupid by the day. Now if a company wants to get rid of a competitor just has to create thousands of backlinks... then show it to a friend in media... and then kabum - the competition is gone.

This is shameful and when Mr Cutts comes forward to talk about this, he's just killing Google.
